| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost an ardent advocate for the |

| 6 | 7 | | study of its history with the passing of Sam Houston IV of Katy on |

| 7 | 8 | | March 10, 2017, at the age of 85; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of Ruth Helen Nilson Houston and Sam Houston |

| 9 | 10 | | III, Sam Houston was born in Claremore, Oklahoma, on September 25, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | 1931; he completed his bachelor's degree in history at the |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | University of Houston and served his country during the Korean War |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | as an infantry platoon leader in the United States Army; |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | subsequently, he served in the Army Reserve for 16 years, attaining |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | the rank of lieutenant colonel; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Houston enjoyed a long career in sales with U.S. |

| 16 | 17 | | Steel, but his passion was early Texas history; the great-grandson |

| 17 | 18 | | of General Sam Houston, he spoke frequently about our state's |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | heritage to schools, civic groups, and other organizations; he was |

| 19 | 20 | | appointed to the Bicentennial Commission of the U.S. Constitution |

| 20 | 21 | | and the Sesquicentennial Commission of the Republic of Texas, and |

| 21 | 22 | | he served as president general of the Sons of the Republic of Texas |

| 22 | 23 | | and as knight commander of the Knights of San Jacinto; in 2010, he |

| 23 | 24 | | was commissioned as commanding general of the Texas Army; he also |

| 24 | 25 | | appeared in the Emmy Award-winning documentary Sam Houston: |

| 25 | 26 | | American Statesman, Soldier, and Pioneer; and |

| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. Houston received numerous |

| 27 | 28 | | accolades; he was one of nine men to receive the Lifetime |

| 28 | 29 | | Achievement Award from the Sons of the Republic over the |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | century-long history of that organization; in 2011, he was |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | presented with the George Washington Award by the Paul Carrington |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution; and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Mr. Houston shared a |

| 33 | 34 | | fulfilling marriage with his wife, Virginia Rose Houston; he took |

| 34 | 35 | | great pride in his three children, Vicky, Steven, and Kevin, his |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | three grandchildren, Sherry, Bridgett, and Scott, and seven |

| 36 | 37 | | great-grandchildren, Jessica, Chelsea, Patrick, Mackenzie, Nicole, |

| 38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Sam Houston helped countless people gain a greater |

| 39 | 40 | | understanding and appreciation of the history of the Lone Star |

| 41 | 42 | | affection by all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be |

| 43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 44 | 45 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sam Houston IV and |
