R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
memories of Flavio Rene Gonzalez, who passed away on January 25,
2017, at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, Flavio Gonzalez was born in Rio Grande City on June
6, 1930, to Flavio and Maria Trevino Gonzalez; after graduating
from Texas A&M University in 1952, he answered his nation's call to
duty and enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, Commissioned as a second lieutenant, Mr. Gonzalez
served as an artillery officer with the Third Infantry Division,
and in 1953, he was stationed at "Outpost Harry," one of the
fortified hilltops near what would become the armistice line;
between June 10 and June 18, the outpost was attacked by a superior
force of Chinese troops, and he took part in its fierce defense; he
was wounded in action but refused to be evacuated until the post
could be relieved, inspiring his comrades to fight on; he earned the
Silver Star and the Purple Heart, and he is one of only three
soldiers recognized at Silver Star Veterans Park in Starr County,
Texas; and
WHEREAS, Returning to civilian life, Mr. Gonzalez enjoyed a
long and successful career as a civil engineer; he worked for the
U.S. Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 2001, and
for 15 years, he was the state engineer for the state of Colorado;
and
WHEREAS, Mr. Gonzalez was joined in matrimony to Edna
Oliverez for more than six decades; he was the proud father of four
children, David, Elina, Andres, and Rosina; later in life, he was
blessed with 13 grandchildren, Conor, Natalia, Javier, Austin,
Marissa, Dylan, Dakota, Stefan, Gabriella, Patrick, Elisandro,
Ileana, and Rebecca; and
WHEREAS, A devoted family man, a dedicated professional, and
a proud veteran, Flavio Gonzalez lived a rich and purposeful life,
and he leaves behind a record of service that his loved ones can
remember with pride; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Flavio Rene
Gonzalez and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives and
friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Flavio Rene
Gonzalez.
