| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The heroic military service of Roger Valentine was |

| 7 | 8 | | the Purple Heart at a ceremony aboard the USS Lexington in Corpus |

| 8 | 9 | | Christi on February 28, 2017; and |

| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, One of our nation's highest military commendations, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | the Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | have been wounded or killed in combat; the Military Order of the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Purple Heart is a veterans organization founded in 1932 that draws |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | its membership from individuals who have received the medal; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, U.S. Army Private First Class Roger Valentine was |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | killed on March 2, 1991, during the Gulf War, and he was |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | posthumously honored with the Purple Heart; in February 1992, |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Chapter 598 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart was founded |

| 18 | 19 | | and named for Private Valentine and Specialist Andy Alaniz, who |

| 19 | 20 | | died three days earlier in the same conflict; and |

| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, At the ceremony in Corpus Christi, Private Valentine |

| 21 | 22 | | and Specialist Alaniz were recognized along with 16 living Purple |

| 22 | 23 | | Heart recipients; among those paying tribute to the honorees were |

| 23 | 24 | | Brigadier General James Mobley, Vietnam veteran J. R. Pena, and the |

| 24 | 25 | | color guard of the W. B. Ray High School Naval Junior ROTC, along |

| 25 | 26 | | with Lieutenant General Marc Cisneros, who accepted Private |

| 26 | 27 | | Valentine's recognition in behalf of the Valentine family; and |

| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, For his selfless efforts and immeasurable |

| 28 | 29 | | sacrifice, Americans owe Roger Valentine a debt of gratitude that |

| 29 | 30 | | time cannot erase, and his memory will long endure in the hearts of |

| 30 | 31 | | all those who were privileged to share in his love and friendship; |
