| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The heroic military service of Dan McLaughlin was |

| 6 | 7 | | recognized by Alaniz-Valentine Chapter 598 of the Military Order of |

| 7 | 8 | | the Purple Heart at a ceremony aboard the USS Lexington in Corpus |

| 8 | 9 | | Christi on February 28, 2017; and |

| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, One of our nation's highest military commendations, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | the Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | have been wounded or killed in combat; the Military Order of the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Purple Heart is a veterans organization founded in 1932 that draws |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | its membership from individuals who have received the medal; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Purple Heart recipient Dan McLaughlin served his |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | nation in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Army, and he was wounded in |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | action on May 11, 1965; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. McLaughlin was one of 16 living Purple Heart |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | recipients who were recognized at the ceremony in Corpus Christi, |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | along with two others who lost their lives in the line of duty; |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | among those paying tribute to the honorees were Brigadier General |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | James Mobley, Vietnam veteran J. R. Pena, and the color guard of the |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | W. B. Ray High School Naval Junior ROTC; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt of gratitude to Dan |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | McLaughlin for putting himself in harm's way to defend our freedom, |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | and his selfless efforts are a source of inspiration for all who |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | know him; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | Legislature hereby honor Dan McLaughlin on the occasion of his |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | recognition by Alaniz-Valentine Chapter 598 of the Military Order |

| 30 | 31 | | of the Purple Heart and commend him for his sacrifice in behalf of |

| 31 | 32 | | our nation; and, be it further |
