| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The members of St. Peter's Parish in Lindsay are |

| 6 | 7 | | marking a milestone in their history with the celebration of the |
|---|
| 7 | 8 | | parish's 125th anniversary in 2017; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, This venerable congregation traces its roots to the |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | early settlement of the Lindsay community by German Catholic |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | colonists in 1891; in January 1892, settlers began meeting in the |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | home of Anton Flusche to form a new parish; their first Mass took |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | place on March 25 of that year, and a small church building was |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | constructed soon thereafter; Sunday services began drawing strong |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | attendance from the nascent community, and under the leadership of |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | Father John Troxler, the parish set about constructing a larger |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | church; the new facility, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, was |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | completed in 1903; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Disaster struck on May 31, 1917, when the church was |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | almost totally destroyed by a tornado, with only the apse, facade, |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | steeple, and three altars left in its ruins; the parishioners rose |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | to the challenge and, salvaging what remained of the old church, |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | completed the reconstruction by the fall of 1918; the church has |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | since weathered nearly a century of storms, and its pristine |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | condition today is a testament to the enormous effort that |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | parishioners have dedicated to its care and upkeep; the building |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Members of St. Peter's Church have benefited from |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | the efforts of many outstanding clergymen from the time of its |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | inception, and that tradition continues today under the leadership |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | of the Reverend Philip Petta; the church oversees numerous |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | ministries and encourages the work of volunteers to serve the |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | parish as well as the wider community; and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Generations of area residents have looked to |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | St. Peter's Parish for inspiration, guidance, and fellowship over |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | the years, and it is a pleasure to join in recognizing this joyous |

| 36 | 37 | | occasion in the life of their congregation; now, therefore, be it |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of St. Peter's |

| 39 | 40 | | Parish and extend to its parishioners sincere best wishes for the |

| 40 | 41 | | future; and, be it further |
