| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, April 4, 2017, is Southwestern Christian College Day |

| 6 | 7 | | at the State Capitol, and this occasion provides a welcome |

| 7 | 8 | | opportunity to recognize this notable institution; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established by leaders in the Churches of Christ as |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | the Southern Bible Institute, the school opened in Fort Worth in |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | 1948; the following year, it adopted its present name and moved to |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | the former Texas Military College property in Terrell; and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jack Evans Sr., a prominent evangelist, became |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | president of the college in 1967 and guided its successful progress |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | toward accreditation as a two-year junior college; in 1982, he led |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | the creation of a bachelor's degree program in Bible and religious |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | education; after five decades at the helm, Dr. Evans retired and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | was succeeded in January 2017 by Dr. Ervin D. Seamster Jr., a |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | graduate of Southwestern Christian College and Perkins School of |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Theology; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Southwestern continues to offer a |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | faith-based, holistic education, fostering academic excellence |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | within the context of commitment to moral and spiritual values; |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | while assisting new high school graduates in their transition to |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | higher education, it prepares students for leadership roles in |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | their communities as well as for participation in the workforce; |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | over the years, many Southwestern alumni have also gone on to become |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | preachers and leaders in the Churches of Christ; and |

| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, For nearly seven decades, Southwestern Christian |

| 29 | 30 | | College has provided young Texans with a strong foundation on which |

| 30 | 31 | | to build fulfilling lives, and its enduring existence stands as a |

| 31 | 32 | | tribute to the faith and dedication of its administrators, faculty, |

| 32 | 33 | | staff, and alumni; now, therefore, be it |

| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
