5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas |

6 | 7 | | Texas State Court are celebrating the organization's 100th |
---|
7 | 8 | | anniversary at its biennial convention, taking place April 20-23, |
---|
8 | 9 | | 2017, in Corpus Christi; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The Catholic Daughters of the Americas was founded |
---|
10 | 11 | | in Utica, New York, in 1903 by John Carberry and several other |
---|
11 | 12 | | members of the Knights of Columbus; dedicated to its motto of "Unity |
---|
12 | 13 | | and Charity," this philanthropic and patriotic order for Catholic |
---|
13 | 14 | | women quickly expanded with the creation of local courts throughout |
---|
14 | 15 | | the country; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The first local court in Texas, now known as the |
---|
16 | 17 | | mother court, was established in Austin in 1909; the number of CDA |
---|
17 | 18 | | groups in the Lone Star State increased over the next several years, |
---|
18 | 19 | | and when the Texas State Court was organized on January 25, 1917, in |
---|
19 | 20 | | Houston, it was made up of 12 charter courts; the state-level CDA |
---|
20 | 21 | | organization has since grown to encompass 245 local courts, |
---|
21 | 22 | | including 5 college- and university-level campus courts, and 68 |
---|
22 | 23 | | Junior Catholic Daughter Courts, which accept young women ages 6 |
---|
23 | 24 | | through 18; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Drawing on the efforts of its more than 18,000 |
---|
25 | 26 | | members, the Texas State Court has performed such charitable acts |
---|
26 | 27 | | as building homes for Habitat for Humanity and sponsoring Memorial |
---|
27 | 28 | | Mass enrollments, which raise more than $30,000 for scholarships |
---|
28 | 29 | | each year; moreover, the group has promoted initiatives centered on |
---|
29 | 30 | | youth and families and on women's health awareness, and it has |
---|
30 | 31 | | provided generous support to the American Wheelchair Mission, |
---|
31 | 32 | | Cameron Colonia, Casa Juan Diego, the Texas Disaster Relief Fund, |
---|
32 | 33 | | and the Annunciation Maternity Home; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Guided by their faith and values, the members of the |
---|
34 | 35 | | Texas State Court of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas have |
---|
35 | 36 | | made a lasting difference in their communities, and their |
---|
36 | 37 | | achievements are indeed deserving of recognition on this important |
---|
37 | 38 | | milestone in the organization's history; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the |
---|
40 | 41 | | Catholic Daughters of the Americas Texas State Court and extend to |
---|
41 | 42 | | all those associated with the court sincere best wishes for |
---|
42 | 43 | | continued success with their important work; and, be it further |
---|
43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
44 | 45 | | prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the |
---|
45 | 46 | | Texas House of Representatives. |
