H.R. No. 1239
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The chess team of The University of Texas at Dallas
enjoyed an exceptional 2016-2017 season, advancing all the way to
the 2017 President's Cup tournament, held in New York City on March
25 and 26; and
WHEREAS, Known as the Final Four of collegiate chess, the
President's Cup brings together the top chess teams in America to
compete for the championship title; the Comets made an impressive
showing at the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship
in December 2016 to earn their 15th appearance in this prestigious
tournament, where they ultimately capped off a memorable year with
a fourth-place finish; and
WHEREAS, Representing UT Dallas at the President's Cup were
grandmasters Gil Popilski, Denis Kadric, David Berczes, Holden
Hernandez, Dani Raznikov, and Angel Arribas; each member of the
roster greatly benefited from the able guidance of coach Rade
Milovanovic, director Jim Stallings, and assistant director Luis
Salinas; and
WHEREAS, Through considerable skill, hard work, and an
unwavering determination to excel, these outstanding competitors
have earned a place among the elite of collegiate chess, and they
may indeed reflect with great pride on their many achievements;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate The University of Texas at Dallas
chess squad on advancing to the 2017 President's Cup and extend to
all those associated with the team sincere best wishes for
continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
