45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Residents of George West lost an admired civic
67 leader with the passing of former mayor Sylvia Steele on December
78 21, 2016, at the age of 75; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in Robstown on January 6, 1941, Sylvia Steele
910 completed her bachelor's degree in business at Texas A&I University
1011 and went on to earn a master's certificate in law enforcement; she
1112 married Charles Howard Steele on April 10, 1968, and they became the
1213 proud parents of five children, Vivian, Diana, John, Brian, and
1314 Linda; through the years, she knew the joy of welcoming 19
1415 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren into her family; and
1516 WHEREAS, Ms. Steele resided in Laredo while employed with the
1617 Webb County Sheriff's Department; during her tenure, she attained
1718 the rank of captain, becoming the only woman to hold that
1819 designation with the department; moreover, she was active in the
1920 D.A.R.E. program, serving as a trainer for the drug resistance
2021 initiative, and she traveled to several South American countries in
2122 that capacity; she was inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame by the
2223 Laredo Commission for Women, and her many other accolades include
2324 the Enrique Camarena Award from the Benevolent and Protective Order
2425 of Elks; and
2526 WHEREAS, After moving to George West, Ms. Steele was elected
2627 to three terms as mayor, and she also served as president of the
2728 governing board of Texas Municipal League Region 11 and as a member
2829 of the Coastal Bend Council of Governments; she further benefited
2930 her community as treasurer of the George West Chamber of Commerce,
3031 as president of the George West Lions Club, and as director of the
3132 Grace Armantrout Museum, and she was a tireless champion for
3233 children and the elderly; and
3334 WHEREAS, A caring wife and mother and a dedicated public
3435 servant, Sylvia Steele made a meaningful difference in the lives of
3536 her loved ones and fellow citizens alike, and her contributions
3637 will be fondly remembered for years to come; now, therefore, be it
3738 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3839 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sylvia Steele and
3940 extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her passing; and, be it
4041 further
4142 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4243 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4344 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sylvia
4445 Steele.
