5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Residents of George West lost an admired civic |

6 | 7 | | leader with the passing of former mayor Sylvia Steele on December |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Robstown on January 6, 1941, Sylvia Steele |

9 | 10 | | completed her bachelor's degree in business at Texas A&I University |
---|
10 | 11 | | and went on to earn a master's certificate in law enforcement; she |
---|
11 | 12 | | married Charles Howard Steele on April 10, 1968, and they became the |
---|
12 | 13 | | proud parents of five children, Vivian, Diana, John, Brian, and |
---|
13 | 14 | | Linda; through the years, she knew the joy of welcoming 19 |
---|
14 | 15 | | grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren into her family; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Steele resided in Laredo while employed with the |
---|
16 | 17 | | Webb County Sheriff's Department; during her tenure, she attained |
---|
17 | 18 | | the rank of captain, becoming the only woman to hold that |
---|
18 | 19 | | designation with the department; moreover, she was active in the |
---|
19 | 20 | | D.A.R.E. program, serving as a trainer for the drug resistance |
---|
20 | 21 | | initiative, and she traveled to several South American countries in |
---|
21 | 22 | | that capacity; she was inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame by the |
---|
22 | 23 | | Laredo Commission for Women, and her many other accolades include |
---|
23 | 24 | | the Enrique Camarena Award from the Benevolent and Protective Order |
---|
24 | 25 | | of Elks; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, After moving to George West, Ms. Steele was elected |
---|
26 | 27 | | to three terms as mayor, and she also served as president of the |
---|
27 | 28 | | governing board of Texas Municipal League Region 11 and as a member |
---|
28 | 29 | | of the Coastal Bend Council of Governments; she further benefited |
---|
29 | 30 | | her community as treasurer of the George West Chamber of Commerce, |
---|
30 | 31 | | as president of the George West Lions Club, and as director of the |
---|
31 | 32 | | Grace Armantrout Museum, and she was a tireless champion for |
---|
32 | 33 | | children and the elderly; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, A caring wife and mother and a dedicated public |
---|
34 | 35 | | servant, Sylvia Steele made a meaningful difference in the lives of |
---|
35 | 36 | | her loved ones and fellow citizens alike, and her contributions |
---|
36 | 37 | | will be fondly remembered for years to come; now, therefore, be it |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sylvia Steele and |

39 | 40 | | extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her passing; and, be it |
