| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, ChildSafe is launching its Cardboard Kids campaign |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A community-wide program, Cardboard Kids was |

| 8 | 9 | | established to heighten awareness about child abuse and neglect; |

| 9 | 10 | | individuals, civic groups, schools, and businesses can join in this |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | effort by decorating and displaying two-foot-tall cardboard |

| 11 | 12 | | cutouts of children, which represent abused and neglected children |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | in the community; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Thousands of Cardboard Kids were distributed in |

| 14 | 15 | | 2016; during this year's observance, sponsored by Valero Energy |

| 15 | 16 | | Foundation, participants will take their cutout to prominent |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | locations, and they can also share photos on social media to begin |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | conversations about this urgent matter; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Across the country, five children die of abuse every |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | day; as a children's advocacy center, ChildSafe works to protect |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | the lives and well-being of youngsters who have been maltreated; it |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | provides a safe, child-friendly environment where law enforcement, |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | child protective services, prosecutors, and medical and mental |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | health professionals can share information and coordinate |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | strategies sensitive to the needs of each unique case and child; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Children are the Lone Star State's most precious |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | resource, and the Cardboard Kids initiative is helping to inform |

| 27 | 28 | | and educate the public about an issue of critical importance; now, |

| 29 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
