| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Alumni of Texas A&M University--Kingsville are |

| 6 | 7 | | gathering at the State Capitol in Austin on January 31, 2017, to |

| 7 | 8 | | celebrate Javelina Day, named in honor of the university's beloved |

| 8 | 9 | | mascot; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Established as a teacher's college in 1925, Texas |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | A&M University--Kingsville is the oldest continuously operating |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | public institution of higher education in South Texas; through the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | years, the school has greatly expanded its educational scope to |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | include six colleges offering numerous baccalaureate degrees as |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | well as master's and doctoral degree programs; it joined The Texas |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | A&M University System in 1989, and in 2006, the Texas A&M Health |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Science Center also opened its Rangel College of Pharmacy on the |

| 17 | 18 | | 250-acre main Kingsville campus; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Today, the university enrolls more than 9,000 |

| 19 | 20 | | students from throughout the country and around the world, |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | reflecting its commitment to serving individuals of diverse |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | cultural, religious, educational, and economic backgrounds; with a |

| 22 | 23 | | student population that is approximately 58 percent Hispanic and 20 |

| 23 | 24 | | percent international, Texas A&M--Kingsville ranks among the top |

| 24 | 25 | | schools in the nation for awarding degrees to Latinas and Latinos, |

| 25 | 26 | | particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and |

| 26 | 27 | | mathematics; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The institution has received well-deserved |

| 28 | 29 | | recognition for a host of academic programs, including the 545-acre |

| 29 | 30 | | teaching farm it operates for agriculture students and its |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | bilingual postgraduate courses; its outstanding environmental |

| 31 | 32 | | engineering curriculum has been rated one of the 50 best in the |

| 32 | 33 | | country by U.S. News and World Report, and Washington Monthly |

| 33 | 34 | | magazine has placed the Kingsville campus among the top 100 |

| 35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Javelina men's and women's sports teams further |

| 36 | 37 | | reflect the ferocity and tenacity for which the student mascot is |

| 37 | 38 | | known; the football team has been especially successful in the |

| 38 | 39 | | athletic arena, capturing 7 national championships and 34 Lone Star |

| 40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, For more than nine decades, Texas A&M |

| 41 | 42 | | University--Kingsville has enriched the lives of its students, |

| 42 | 43 | | contributed to the advancement of human knowledge, and proved a |

| 43 | 44 | | powerful force for social progress and economic development in the |
|---|
| 44 | 45 | | Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

| 45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 46 | 47 | | Legislature hereby recognize January 31, 2017, as Javelina Day at |

| 47 | 48 | | the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |

| 48 | 49 | | best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
