45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Lynn Wyatt of Houston has been named the 2017 Texas
67 Medal of Arts honoree for Individual Arts Patron by the Texas
78 Cultural Trust; and
89 WHEREAS, The Texas Medal of Arts program pays tribute to
910 residents of the Lone Star State who have significantly benefited a
1011 variety of artistic disciplines, through either personal
1112 achievement or benevolent support; and
1213 WHEREAS, A third-generation Texan, Lynn Sakowitz Wyatt has
1314 long been a philanthropist and civic leader; locally, she chaired
1415 the Houston Grand Opera's 50th anniversary Golden Jubilee Gala,
1516 which raised $2.5 million for the company, and featured such
1617 international stars as Renée Fleming, Bryn Terfel, Philip Glass,
1718 and Elton John; Mrs. Wyatt is also chair emeritus of the Brilliant
1819 Lecture Series' Youth Leadership Program and a life trustee of the
1920 Star of Hope Mission, and in 1980, Governor William P. Clements
2021 named her an Ambassador of Goodwill for the State of Texas; and
2122 WHEREAS, Active in a number of efforts at the national level
2223 as well, Mrs. Wyatt is a founding trustee of the Princess Grace
2324 Foundation USA, and she chaired the inaugural gala in Washington,
2425 D.C., for President Ronald Reagan; as President Reagan's appointee,
2526 she served for eight years on the board of the U.S. Naval Academy;
2627 and
2728 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan has shared her time and
2829 resources with the international community as well, serving as
2930 chair of the Bal de la Rose in Monaco, an annual event that she
3031 transformed into a weekend of festivities benefiting the Red Cross
3132 and the American Hospital of Paris; she is also a special advisor to
3233 Nobel laureate Luc Montagnier, president of the World Foundation
3334 for Medical Research and Prevention, and she has generously
3435 supported the Elton John AIDS Foundation; and
3536 WHEREAS, Mrs. Wyatt's many honors include the Masterson Award
3637 from the Houston Grand Opera and the Woodson Medal from the Houston
3738 Forum, and she was inducted into France's prestigious Order of Arts
3839 and Letters as a chevalier in 1982, with a promotion to the rank of
3940 officer in 2007; moreover, she has been named Houston's Most
4041 Fascinating by the Texas Medical Center Library, Socialite of the
4142 Century by Texas Monthly, and a Cadillac Texas Legend by KHOU-TV in
4243 Houston; and
4344 WHEREAS, Cultural organizations across the Lone Star State
4445 and beyond have benefited immeasurably from the altruism of Lynn
4546 Wyatt, and she has set an inspiring example of the good that one
4647 person can accomplish; now, therefore, be it
4748 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4849 Legislature hereby congratulate Lynn Wyatt on her selection as the
4950 2017 Texas Medal of Arts honoree for Individual Arts Patron and
5051 extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
5152 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5253 prepared for Mrs. Wyatt as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5354 House of Representatives.
