| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Marcelo Cavazos of the Arlington Independent |

| 6 | 7 | | School District was named the 2016 Superintendent of the Year by the |

| 7 | 8 | | Texas Association of School Boards; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Marcelo Cavazos began his career in education in |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | 1990 as an English teacher in the Mission Consolidated Independent |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | School District; after two years, he moved to McAllen ISD, where he |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | taught English and government, and he went on to become the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | secondary language arts supervisor for Mercedes ISD in 1993 and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | associate advisor for San Benito Consolidated ISD in 1995; he also |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | spent a year with the Texas Education Agency Department of School |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | Finance and Support and lectured at The University of Texas at |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Arlington; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In 1999, Dr. Cavazos joined Arlington ISD as |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | associate superintendent for instruction; over the following |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | years, he served the district as interim deputy superintendent, |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | deputy superintendent, and interim superintendent before assuming |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | his current office in 2012; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Engaged in civic affairs as well, Dr. Cavazos sits |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | on the boards of a number of notable organizations, including |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | SafeHaven of Tarrant County, the Texas School Alliance, and the |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Arlington Chamber of Commerce; he further contributes to his |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | community through his affiliation with the Knights of Columbus, the |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | Rotary Club, and the Lions Club, and he is a member of St. Matthew |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | Catholic Church; he has received such prestigious accolades as the |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | Arlington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "Sharing the Dream" Award and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | the YMCA Citizen of the Year Award; and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Dr. Cavazos enjoys the support |

| 32 | 33 | | of his wife, Nora, and his children, Theresa and Diego; he holds |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | bachelor's and master's degrees from The University of Texas--Pan |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | American and a doctorate from UT Austin; and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The students of Arlington have gained immeasurably |

| 36 | 37 | | from this esteemed educator's broad experience and incisive |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | leadership, and he is indeed deserving of this most recent honor; |

| 39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Marcelo Cavazos on his |
