| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, United States Army Sergeant (Ret.) Steve Land of |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of Midland, Steve Land graduated from |

| 9 | 10 | | Belton High School in 2003, and two years later, he answered his |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | nation's call to duty by enlisting in the army; in addition to being |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | stationed in Hawaii, South Korea, and Germany, he served four |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | deployments to the Middle East; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, While on patrol in Zabul Province in Afghanistan in |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | 2009, Sergeant Land was seriously injured when his Humvee was |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | struck by an improvised explosive device; the blast claimed the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | lives of everyone in the vehicle except Sergeant Land, who was |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | immediately flown to Germany for treatment; he later recuperated at |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Walter Reed National Military Medical Center near Washington, D.C., |

| 19 | 20 | | for nearly a year and was then transferred to Brooke Army Medical |

| 20 | 21 | | Center in San Antonio; he retired from the army in 2012; and |

| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt of gratitude to our |

| 22 | 23 | | country's military personnel, for they are called on to bear great, |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | often unimaginable burdens, and they render service and sacrifice |

| 24 | 25 | | that is truly beyond measure; through his unfaltering devotion to |

| 25 | 26 | | his country, Sergeant Land embodies the highest ideals of the U.S. |

| 26 | 27 | | armed forces, and he has earned the lasting respect and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | appreciation of his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |

| 28 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 29 | 30 | | Legislature hereby honor Sergeant Steve Land for his valorous |

| 30 | 31 | | service in behalf of his country and extend to him heartfelt best |
