| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, During the first part of the 19th century, the |

| 9 | 10 | | grassy prairie region of South Texas that would become Atascosa |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | County attracted Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-American settlers, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | and by the time of the Texas Revolution, its ranching industry was |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | flourishing; in 1856, the region was sufficiently populated to be |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | sectioned off from Bexar County; the county seat, originally at |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Navatasco, was later moved to Pleasanton, and then in 1910, voters |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | supported moving it again, this time to the more centrally located |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | town of Jourdanton; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Atascosa County is home to a number of historical |

| 18 | 19 | | markers that highlight the area's unique history; notably, the |

| 19 | 20 | | Battle of Medina, which took place in 1813 and influenced the fates |

| 20 | 21 | | of Spain, Mexico, the United States, England, and France, is |

| 21 | 22 | | commemorated with a marker in the northeastern part of the county, |

| 22 | 23 | | and the site of the church and school community of San Augustine, |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | founded by heirs of Alamo defender Gregorio Esparza, is marked near |

|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Situated near the famous Camino Real, Atascosa |

| 26 | 27 | | County has long benefited from its proximity to major |

| 27 | 28 | | transportation arteries linking it with the Gulf Coast, the Rio |

| 28 | 29 | | Grande Valley, and Mexico, as well as other major population |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | centers; the county enjoys the economic benefits reaped by an |

| 30 | 31 | | abundance of natural resources and, blessed with productive range |

| 31 | 32 | | and irrigated farmland, the area is known for its agricultural |

| 32 | 33 | | industries; additionally, other resources such as oil and gas play |

| 34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Proud of its ranching heritage, Pleasanton, the |

| 35 | 36 | | county's trading center, bills itself as the birthplace of the |

| 36 | 37 | | cowboy, a designation symbolized by a large bronze statue in front |

| 37 | 38 | | of city hall; in nearby Poteet, known to many as the Strawberry |

| 38 | 39 | | Capital, a Strawberry Festival takes place in April, and a |

| 39 | 40 | | seven-foot, 1,600-pound monument to the berry graces the front lawn |

| 41 | 42 | | WHEREAS, The residents of Atascosa County have made many |
