| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Georgina Cecilia Pérez of El Paso was elected to a |

| 6 | 7 | | four-year term on the Texas State Board of Education on November 8, |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of El Paso and a graduate of Eastwood High |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | School in the Ysleta Independent School District, Georgina Pérez |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | earned degrees in business administration and accounting and human |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | resource development along with a teaching certification from The |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | University of Texas at El Paso; she subsequently served Ysleta ISD |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | for more than a decade as an eighth-grade teacher, department |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | chair, teacher mentor, and professional development educator, and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | she remains involved in curriculum development and educator |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | training; and |

| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Pérez has been active in promoting literacy |

| 18 | 19 | | efforts as the founder of Tu Libro, which to date has distributed |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | more than 150,000 books to students living in rural and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | impoverished communities in El Paso County who are without regular |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | access to a library; in addition, she and her team have spearheaded |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | the creation of a new library in Socorro to provide over 55,000 area |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | residents with free access to reading materials; and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The founder and director of the Cotton Valley |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Scholars education program, Ms. Pérez is also the founder and board |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | president of the Rural Schools Scholarship Foundation and a |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | creative director for Celebrate Freedom Week; moreover, she is |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | active on the state level as secretary of public affairs for the |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | Texas Alliance of Black School Educators; in her work as a member of |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | the State Board of Education for District 1, she represents Texans |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | in 40 counties across West and Southwest Texas and holds a place on |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | the board's committee on instruction; and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, With her wealth of leadership experience and |

| 34 | 35 | | tireless commitment to Texas schoolchildren, Georgina Pérez is well |

| 35 | 36 | | suited to helping shape the future of public schools in our state, |

| 36 | 37 | | and her fellow Texans are fortunate to benefit from her service in |

| 37 | 38 | | this important role; now, therefore, be it |

| 38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Georgina Cecilia Pérez on her |
