6 | 7 | | man came to an untimely end with the passing of Dr. David Kirk |

7 | 8 | | Wittenburg of El Paso on October 26, 2015, at the age of 53; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born on March 6, 1962, to Joe and Ruthy Wittenburg, |

9 | 10 | | David Wittenburg grew up with a brother, Alex, and three sisters, |
---|
10 | 11 | | Leslie, Donna, and Michelle; he attended public schools in Lometa, |
---|
11 | 12 | | where he excelled in track and field and other sports, and his |
---|
12 | 13 | | interest in athletics led him to obtain a bachelor's degree in |
---|
13 | 14 | | physical education from Angelo State University; following his |
---|
14 | 15 | | graduation, he began his career as a physical education teacher and |
---|
15 | 16 | | coach in the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio; |
---|
16 | 17 | | and |

17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, During his time as a schoolteacher, Dr. Wittenburg |

18 | 19 | | developed an interest in studying the cardiovascular health of |

19 | 20 | | children; he returned to college, earning a master's degree in |

20 | 21 | | physical education from Texas State University and a Ph.D. in |
---|
21 | 22 | | kinesiology from Texas A&M University; he went on to hold faculty |
---|
22 | 23 | | appointments at New Mexico State University, the University of New |
---|
23 | 24 | | Mexico, and The University of Texas at Brownsville before being |
---|
24 | 25 | | hired to chair the Department of Kinesiology at The University of |
---|
25 | 26 | | Texas at El Paso; over the course of his career, his work was |
---|
26 | 27 | | presented at conferences hosted by the American College of Sports |
---|
27 | 28 | | Medicine and Frontiers of Cardiology, as well as at the |
---|
28 | 29 | | International Obesity Conference, and he was a member of the ACSM |
---|
29 | 30 | | and the National Strength and Conditioning Association; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Although he found great fulfillment in his career, |
---|
31 | 32 | | the foremost priority in Dr. Wittenburg's life was his family; |
---|
32 | 33 | | devoted to his wife, Cynthia, he took great pride in his children, |
---|
33 | 34 | | Caleb, Joshua, Matthew, Kristen, and Tara, and in his grandsons, |
---|
34 | 35 | | Ellis, Jackman, and Wyatt; he was fond of the outdoors and delighted |
---|
35 | 36 | | in spending time on his ranch in Lometa, and he also took the family |
---|
36 | 37 | | on frequent trips to New Mexico, where he fell in love with the |

37 | 38 | | desert and the mountains; and |
---|
38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Dr. David Wittenburg enjoyed a life that was rich in |

39 | 40 | | personal and professional achievements, and he will long be |
---|
40 | 41 | | remembered with admiration and affection by those he leaves behind; |

41 | 42 | | now, therefore, be it |

42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. David Kirk |

44 | 45 | | Wittenburg and extend sincere condolences to his relatives and |
