| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Jennifer Rodriguez of Corpus Christi is being |

| 6 | 7 | | awarded a 2017-2018 Joe A. Gonzalez (JAG) Education Is Our Freedom |

| 7 | 8 | | GED College Scholarship; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Rodriguez attends Del Mar College, where she is |

| 9 | 10 | | studying criminal justice and nursing; and |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The Education Is Our Freedom scholarship program was |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | founded by Joe Gonzalez, a longtime public servant and advocate for |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | education; Mr. Gonzalez is currently serving his second term as |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Nueces County commissioner for Precinct 2, having first been |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | elected to that office in 2010; he previously worked for more than |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | two decades with the United States Department of Justice, and after |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | retiring from the DOJ in 1999, he spent nine years as justice of the |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | peace for Precinct 1, Place 1, in Nueces County; he created the |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Education Is Our Freedom program in memory of the late Drs. Hector |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | P. Garcia, Cleo Garcia, and Xico Garcia, and since its |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | establishment in 2005, some 1,165 scholarships have been awarded; |

| 21 | 22 | | and |

| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, A most deserving recipient, Jennifer Rodriguez is |

| 23 | 24 | | demonstrating impressive drive and ability as she works toward her |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | scholastic and personal goals, and she may indeed look forward to a |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | future bright with promise; now, therefore, be it |

| 26 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 27 | 28 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Jennifer Rodriguez on her receipt |
