45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Central High School in Galveston is commemorating
67 the 132nd anniversary of its founding with a three-day celebration
78 on June 18-20, 2017; and
89 WHEREAS, The first African American high school in Texas,
910 Central High School was organized in 1885 and operated in its
1011 earliest years first in rented quarters on 16th Street and then at a
1112 location on 15th Street; in 1893, a dedicated six-classroom
1213 facility designed by famed architect Nicholas Clayton was
1314 constructed on Avenue M, and a new wing was later added to
1415 accommodate the growing student population; this space housed the
1516 school until it transitioned in 1954 to its final location between
1617 31st and 33rd Streets; and
1718 WHEREAS, Following the integration of Galveston public
1819 schools, Central High was closed in 1968; the Old Central Cultural
1920 Center was established in 1974 in the former school building on
2021 Avenue M, and it continues to serve as a landmark to preserve the
2122 legacy of this historic institution, which provided vital
2223 educational opportunities to more than 40,000 young men and women
2324 during its 83 years of operation; and
2425 WHEREAS, Central High School remains an important part of the
2526 rich heritage of the city of Galveston, and the anniversary of its
2627 establishment offers a welcome occasion to recognize its many
2728 significant contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore,
2829 be it
2930 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3031 Legislature hereby commemorate the 132nd anniversary of the
3132 founding of Central High School in Galveston and extend to all those
3233 associated with the institution sincere best wishes for a memorable
3334 event.
