5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Central High School in Galveston is commemorating |

6 | 7 | | the 132nd anniversary of its founding with a three-day celebration |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The first African American high school in Texas, |

9 | 10 | | Central High School was organized in 1885 and operated in its |

10 | 11 | | earliest years first in rented quarters on 16th Street and then at a |
---|
11 | 12 | | location on 15th Street; in 1893, a dedicated six-classroom |
---|
12 | 13 | | facility designed by famed architect Nicholas Clayton was |
---|
13 | 14 | | constructed on Avenue M, and a new wing was later added to |
---|
14 | 15 | | accommodate the growing student population; this space housed the |
---|
15 | 16 | | school until it transitioned in 1954 to its final location between |
---|
16 | 17 | | 31st and 33rd Streets; and |

17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Following the integration of Galveston public |

18 | 19 | | schools, Central High was closed in 1968; the Old Central Cultural |
---|
19 | 20 | | Center was established in 1974 in the former school building on |
---|
20 | 21 | | Avenue M, and it continues to serve as a landmark to preserve the |
---|
21 | 22 | | legacy of this historic institution, which provided vital |
---|
22 | 23 | | educational opportunities to more than 40,000 young men and women |
---|
23 | 24 | | during its 83 years of operation; and |

24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Central High School remains an important part of the |

25 | 26 | | rich heritage of the city of Galveston, and the anniversary of its |

26 | 27 | | establishment offers a welcome occasion to recognize its many |

27 | 28 | | significant contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, |

29 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

30 | 31 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 132nd anniversary of the |

31 | 32 | | founding of Central High School in Galveston and extend to all those |

32 | 33 | | associated with the institution sincere best wishes for a memorable |
---|
