| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Manolo Alvarez of Veterans Memorial Early College |

| 6 | 7 | | High School is being awarded a 2017 Dell Scholarship; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, An initiative of the Michael and Susan Dell |

| 8 | 9 | | Foundation, the Dell Scholars Program awards scholarships annually |

| 9 | 10 | | to up to 400 low-income students, most of whom represent the first |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | generation in their families to attend college, and many of whom |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | have already overcome various personal challenges in their lives; |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | in addition to an annual $20,000 award that is renewable for six |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | years, the program provides a laptop, tutoring, mentoring, and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | other resources; more than 80 percent of Dell Scholars graduate |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | within six years, four times the national rate for low-income |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | students; and |

| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, A most deserving recipient, Manolo Alvarez has |

| 18 | 19 | | demonstrated impressive drive and ability as he works toward his |

| 19 | 20 | | scholastic and personal goals, and he may indeed look forward to a |

| 20 | 21 | | future bright with promise; now, therefore, be it |

| 21 | 22 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
