| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Cystic fibrosis, commonly referred to as CF, is a |

| 7 | 8 | | adults in the United States, more than 1,700 of whom live in this |

| 8 | 9 | | state; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, CF is a life-threatening disease that impairs the |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | function of the body's respiratory and digestive systems; it occurs |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | in approximately 1 out of every 3,500 live births in the United |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | States, with approximately 1,000 new cases diagnosed every year; |

| 13 | 14 | | and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, While CF remains a serious health concern around the |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | globe, there have been significant gains in treatment; today, the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | median predicted survival age for persons with the disease is 41 |

| 17 | 18 | | years, a dramatic improvement since the 1950s, when children with |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | CF rarely lived to attend elementary school; as a result of the |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | medical advances, the number of adults living with the disease has |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | steadily grown; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment of CF can greatly |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | enhance the quality of life and longevity of patients; in addition |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | to employing a daily regimen of home care, patients can benefit from |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | antibiotics and other innovative treatments that can help |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | considerably in managing their symptoms; moreover, Texas is home to |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | 11 world-class centers that specialize in the diagnosis of CF and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | the care of persons living with the disease; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Public awareness is crucial to enabling more |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | patients with CF to live longer, healthier lives, and Cystic |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | Fibrosis Awareness Month in May provides an opportune time to |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | promote education about the disease and to encourage support for |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | additional research; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 2017 as Cystic Fibrosis Awareness |

| 35 | 36 | | Month and urge Texans to learn more about CF and to get involved in |

| 36 | 37 | | the effort to find a cure for this devastating disease. |
