H.R. No. 1891 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Johnny Canales is being presented with a Mexican American Lifetime Achievement Award by Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi at a banquet on May 4, 2017; and WHEREAS, Johnny Canales was born in Mexico and raised in Robstown; passionate about music from a young age, he started performing as a singer and guitarist at six years old alongside his violinist father; he went on to begin a career in broadcasting as a disc jockey at radio station KCCT in Corpus Christi in the late 1960s, and he later transitioned to television as host of The Johnny Canales Show; and WHEREAS, The Spanish-language talk show debuted on KRIS-TV in 1983, and just five years later, it was syndicated across the United States and Mexico on Univision and Televisa, respectively; the program eventually moved to Telemundo in 1996 and ran for nine additional years; today, Mr. Canales and his wife, Nora, cohost El Show de Johnny y Nora Canales on Telemundo; and WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Mr. Canales has been an influential figure in Tejano music, helping to launch the careers of such legendary artists as Selena, Little Joe, Intocable, Jimmy Gonzalez, and José José; admired by entertainers, peers, and fans alike, he has received more than 400 accolades, and his name was emblazoned on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars in 2016; and WHEREAS, Known for his signature line, "You got it; take it away!," Johnny Canales has served as an inspiring trailblazer and trendsetter in his profession for the past half century, garnering millions of loyal followers along the way, and he is truly deserving of this prestigious award; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Johnny Canales on his receipt of a Mexican American Lifetime Achievement Award from Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Canales as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
