| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The descendants of Isaac "Ike" Reed are gathering in |

| 6 | 7 | | Austin from July 27 through 30, 2017, for their much-anticipated |

| 7 | 8 | | family reunion, an event that has taken place for more than four |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | decades; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Born in France in 1823, Ike Reed was the biracial son |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | of a white mother and a black father; after being adopted, he came |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | to the United States at a young age and became a citizen; he went on |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | to travel throughout the country and to eventually settle in |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Louisiana, where he acquired more than 200 acres of land and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | operated several small businesses; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was the father of 17 children, and over the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | years, his family has spread across the nation and around the world |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | and has grown to include medical doctors, educators, athletes, |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | lawyers, ministers, public servants, business owners, and military |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | veterans; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Since 1973, descendants of Ike Reed have come |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | together to share in one another's company and to celebrate the rich |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | heritage that has united them for almost two centuries, and it is |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | indeed a pleasure to recognize this special occasion; now, |

| 25 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 26 | 27 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 41st Isaac "Ike" Reed Family |
