| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Since 1993, the third week in October has been set |

| 6 | 7 | | aside as National Veterinary Technician Week to recognize the |

| 7 | 8 | | contributions made by members of this caring profession; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Veterinary technicians play a vital role in the |

| 9 | 10 | | daily functioning of veterinary practices, working under the |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | supervision of a veterinarian; technicians handle many of the same |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | responsibilities that nurses and other medical professionals |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | perform for physicians, such as obtaining and recording patient |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | histories, collecting specimens, preparing for surgeries, and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | assisting in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Like veterinarians, vet techs are trained to work |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | with several species of animals; the American Veterinary Medical |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Association accredits veterinary technology programs leading to |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | associate or bachelor's degrees, which cover such subjects as |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | anatomy, microbiology, pharmacology, anesthesiology, clinical |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | pathology, and radiology; all students in AVMA-accredited programs |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | complete a preceptorship, practicum, or externship to gain hands-on |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | experience; after passing their credentialing examination, they |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | must keep their knowledge current with continuing education courses |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | in order to maintain their license; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The majority of veterinary technicians are employed |

| 26 | 27 | | in private practice, but the demand for their skills is rapidly |

| 27 | 28 | | expanding; today, veterinary technicians also serve in the |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | military, food safety inspection, zoos, wildlife facilities, |

| 29 | 30 | | animal control, diagnostic laboratories, humane societies, and |

| 30 | 31 | | other settings; and |

| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Highly skilled professionals, veterinary |

| 32 | 33 | | technicians work tirelessly to ensure the health and well-being of |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | animals, promote humane treatment, and advance the standard of care |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | in their growing field; now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby recognize October 15-21, 2017, as National |
