| 8 | 9 | | daughters who have given their lives in service to their country; |

| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Incorporated in 1929, American Gold Star Mothers is |

| 11 | 12 | | composed of women whose children, as U.S. service personnel, were |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | killed in action during times of war or conflict; its name comes |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | from the custom of hanging a service flag for each member of the |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | military, with blue stars for living soldiers and gold stars |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | representing those who perished in battle; in their efforts to help |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | perpetuate the memory of their loved ones, Gold Star Mothers host |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | remembrance events, perform volunteer work at veterans hospitals, |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | and promote a message of respect and reverence for members of the |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | armed forces; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Gold Star Mother's Day is observed on the last |

| 21 | 22 | | Sunday in September, and each year, the president of the United |

| 22 | 23 | | States issues a proclamation for the event that calls on all |

| 23 | 24 | | citizens to display the Stars and Stripes as an expression of |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | appreciation and support for Gold Star Mothers and their families; |

| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe profound and eternal gratitude to |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our |

| 28 | 29 | | freedom, and Gold Star Mother's Day provides a fitting time to |

| 29 | 30 | | reflect on and honor the selfless service of these patriotic men and |

| 30 | 31 | | women and to recognize the loss experienced by their mothers; now, |

| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Gold Star Mother's Day 2017 and |
