5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Moore County News-Press is celebrating the 90th |

6 | 7 | | anniversary of its founding in 2017, and this occasion offers a |

7 | 8 | | fitting opportunity to pay tribute to the rich history of this |
---|
8 | 9 | | venerable community newspaper; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Originally known as the Moore County News, the paper |
---|
10 | 11 | | was founded by Ralph Miller and his brother-in-law, Amos DeWolfe, |
---|
11 | 12 | | with another family member, Fern Miller, serving as editor; the |
---|
12 | 13 | | first issue was published in Dumas on July 17, 1927; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The County News was subsequently owned by Fred C. |
---|
14 | 15 | | Wortham and then purchased in 1937 by W. R. Rutherford; Gene Alford |
---|
15 | 16 | | and Howard Jacob bought the paper in 1955 and moved it into a new |
---|
16 | 17 | | building, after which Mr. Jacob became sole owner; in 1960, a |
---|
17 | 18 | | former printer for the County News, Gene Sanders, set up a competing |
---|
18 | 19 | | paper, the North Plains Press, and Mr. Jacob responded by |
---|
19 | 20 | | publishing five times a week and renaming his paper the Moore County |
---|
20 | 21 | | Daily News; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In 1964, veteran newsman Dick Reavis moved to Dumas |
---|
22 | 23 | | and acquired the Daily News, and two months later, he bought the |
---|
23 | 24 | | North Plains Press; he combined the two papers as the Moore County |
---|
24 | 25 | | News-Press and returned to a semiweekly publication schedule; the |
---|
25 | 26 | | business moved into a new building in 1974; in the 1980s, the paper |
---|
26 | 27 | | was purchased by Southern Newspapers, and since 2000, it has been |
---|
27 | 28 | | owned by Lancaster Management Group; and |
---|
28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The News-Press has employed many talented |
---|
29 | 30 | | journalists over the years; one of its first staffers, W. W. "Hick" |
---|
30 | 31 | | Halcomb, wrote a column called World's Greatest Hick, and several |
---|
31 | 32 | | of the paper's editors and writers have been inducted into the |
---|
32 | 33 | | Panhandle Press Association Hall of Fame, including Mr. Reavis and |
---|
33 | 34 | | Mr. Rutherford, as well as Gardner Collins, Rose Watson, and Dave |

34 | 35 | | McReynolds; and |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Serving as both a written record of the region's |

36 | 37 | | history and a voice for its readers, the News-Press has been a vital |
---|
37 | 38 | | community resource for nine decades, keeping the residents of Moore |

38 | 39 | | County informed and enlightened; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Moore |
---|
41 | 42 | | County News-Press and extend to its staff sincere best wishes for |
---|
42 | 43 | | continued success in their important work; and, be it further |

43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

44 | 45 | | prepared for the Moore County News-Press as an expression of high |

45 | 46 | | regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
