45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Residents of Lubbock are mourning the loss of
67 admired community leader Charley James Wasson, who passed away on
78 May 10, 2017, at the age of 41; and
89 WHEREAS, The son of Jimmy and Shirley Wasson, Charley Wasson
910 was born in Fritch on December 8, 1975; as a young man, he often
1011 worked with his grandparents on the family farm, and his character
1112 was further shaped by his participation in debate and the Boy
1213 Scouts, where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout; and
1314 WHEREAS, After receiving a bachelor's degree in English and a
1415 master's degree in sports management and marketing from Texas Tech
1516 University, Mr. Wasson embarked on a career in cancer and hospice
1617 care; beginning in 1999, he worked for Covenant Health, first at the
1718 Joe Arrington Cancer Research and Treatment Center and later as the
1819 executive director and CEO of Hospice of Lubbock and the Covenant
1920 palliative care program; in recognition of his outstanding efforts,
2021 he received the 2015 Values in Action Award for Justice from
2122 Covenant Health; and
2223 WHEREAS, Mr. Wasson contributed to his professional
2324 community as a member of the Texas and New Mexico Hospice
2425 Organization and the Texas Non-Profit Hospice Alliance boards; he
2526 also held leadership roles with a number of worthy civic groups,
2627 including Women's Protective Services; and
2728 WHEREAS, Beloved by many for his warmth, compassion, and good
2829 humor, Mr. Wasson was especially devoted to his nieces and nephews;
2930 he remained loyal all his life to the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and
3031 his other interests included photography, travel, and movies; he
3132 was also a man of strong religious faith and a valued congregant of
3233 First United Methodist Church; and
3334 WHEREAS, Charley Wasson lived a caring and purposeful life,
3435 and although his journey on this earth ended far too soon, he leaves
3536 behind a record of service to others that will forever inspire all
3637 those who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it
3738 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3839 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Charley James
3940 Wasson and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family:
4041 to his mother and stepfather, Shirley and Kent Eagle; to his
4142 brother, Jamey Wasson, and his wife, Leslie; to his sisters, Kim
4243 Huot and her husband, John, Shelly Biggs and her husband, Rusty, Kay
4344 Lynn Clifford and her husband, Chris, Debbie Petersen and her
4445 husband, Eric, and Kathy Whittenberg and her husband, Kyle; to his
4546 nephews and nieces; and to his other relatives and many friends;
4647 and, be it further
4748 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4849 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4950 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Charley
5051 Wasson.
