5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Lubbock are mourning the loss of |

6 | 7 | | admired community leader Charley James Wasson, who passed away on |

7 | 8 | | May 10, 2017, at the age of 41; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of Jimmy and Shirley Wasson, Charley Wasson |
---|
9 | 10 | | was born in Fritch on December 8, 1975; as a young man, he often |
---|
10 | 11 | | worked with his grandparents on the family farm, and his character |
---|
11 | 12 | | was further shaped by his participation in debate and the Boy |
---|
12 | 13 | | Scouts, where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, After receiving a bachelor's degree in English and a |
---|
14 | 15 | | master's degree in sports management and marketing from Texas Tech |
---|
15 | 16 | | University, Mr. Wasson embarked on a career in cancer and hospice |
---|
16 | 17 | | care; beginning in 1999, he worked for Covenant Health, first at the |
---|
17 | 18 | | Joe Arrington Cancer Research and Treatment Center and later as the |
---|
18 | 19 | | executive director and CEO of Hospice of Lubbock and the Covenant |
---|
19 | 20 | | palliative care program; in recognition of his outstanding efforts, |
---|
20 | 21 | | he received the 2015 Values in Action Award for Justice from |
---|
21 | 22 | | Covenant Health; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Wasson contributed to his professional |
---|
23 | 24 | | community as a member of the Texas and New Mexico Hospice |
---|
24 | 25 | | Organization and the Texas Non-Profit Hospice Alliance boards; he |
---|
25 | 26 | | also held leadership roles with a number of worthy civic groups, |
---|
26 | 27 | | including Women's Protective Services; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Beloved by many for his warmth, compassion, and good |
---|
28 | 29 | | humor, Mr. Wasson was especially devoted to his nieces and nephews; |
---|
29 | 30 | | he remained loyal all his life to the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and |
---|
30 | 31 | | his other interests included photography, travel, and movies; he |
---|
31 | 32 | | was also a man of strong religious faith and a valued congregant of |
---|
32 | 33 | | First United Methodist Church; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Charley Wasson lived a caring and purposeful life, |
---|
34 | 35 | | and although his journey on this earth ended far too soon, he leaves |
---|
35 | 36 | | behind a record of service to others that will forever inspire all |
---|
36 | 37 | | those who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Charley James |

39 | 40 | | Wasson and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family: |

40 | 41 | | to his mother and stepfather, Shirley and Kent Eagle; to his |

41 | 42 | | brother, Jamey Wasson, and his wife, Leslie; to his sisters, Kim |
