| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Eight-year-old Zachary Cousin of Winnsboro |

| 7 | 8 | | April 29, 2017, when he helped rescue his family after a traumatic |

| 8 | 9 | | accident; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The son of Holly and Seth Cousin, Zachary was |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | accompanying his parents and his siblings, 10-year-old Carter and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | 10-month-old Birdie, on a trip to visit relatives when they found |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | themselves in the path of a tornado on Highway 98; the twister swept |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | their sport utility vehicle off the roadway and sent it rolling |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | several times; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, After regaining consciousness, Zachary saw that his |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | parents and siblings were alive but badly injured; he first helped |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | his older brother out of the back row of seats, and after escaping |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | the SUV, the two boys made their way to the road, where their mother |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | was trying to flag down a passing car for help; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Zachary then returned to the SUV, where after |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | several attempts, he was able to free his infant sister from her car |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | seat; he carefully pulled Birdie through a small opening and then |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | brought her to their mother; Zachary returned a second time to |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | attempt to help his father, but Mr. Cousin was trapped inside the |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | severely damaged vehicle; and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Zachary's mother was soon able to stop a passing |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | motorist, who rushed her and the children to a nearby hospital; a |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | short while later, first responders rescued Zachary's father using |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | the Jaws of Life; fortunate to have survived this harrowing |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | incident, the family continues to support one another as they |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | recover from their injuries; and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, In a dire situation, Zachary Cousin distinguished |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | himself as an exceptionally brave and capable young Texan, and his |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | remarkable heroism is an inspiration to all who know him; now, |

| 35 | 36 | | therefore, be it |

| 36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby honor Zachary Cousin for his efforts to rescue |
