H.R. No. 2555
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Waskom High School football team once again
proved itself one of the finest in Texas by winning the 2015
University Interscholastic League 3A Division 2 state championship
on December 17 at NRG Stadium in Houston; and
WHEREAS, With their exciting victory over Franklin High
School in the title game, the Wildcats completed a perfect season in
which they compiled a record of 16 wins and zero losses and claimed
the school's second consecutive 3A crown; throughout the year, the
Waskom players bested their opponents with a potent offense that
averaged more than 45 points per game and an aggressive defense that
posted six shutouts; and
WHEREAS, The team began its march through the playoffs with a
dominating victory over De Kalb High School in the bi-district
round of play; the Wildcats followed that performance with
impressive wins over Gunter, Arp, and West Rusk High Schools before
recording a 28-24 triumph against Idalou in the semifinals to earn a
trip to the state championship game; and
WHEREAS, After falling behind Franklin High early in the 3A
Division 2 final, Waskom responded with two touchdowns in the
second quarter to take the lead; the teams traded scores in the
third quarter and entered the final frame knotted up at 21-21;
refusing to give up on their goal of winning back-to-back state
titles, the Wildcats regained the lead on a 14-yard touchdown
scramble by quarterback Dylan Harkrider; running back Chan Amie
then sealed the win with an eight-yard touchdown run with just over
one minute left in the game to bring the final score to 33-21; and
WHEREAS, The Wildcats' success was the result of a true team
effort; each member of the roster provided valuable contributions
over the course of the season, and these dedicated athletes
benefited from the expertise and inspirational leadership of head
coach Whitney Keeling and his staff; and
WHEREAS, The members of the Waskom High football team
demonstrated admirable skill and determination in winning the state
championship and attaining a flawless record against top
competition, and they will forever treasure the memory of this
outstanding achievement; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the Waskom High School football
team on winning the 2015 UIL 3A Division 2 state championship and
extend to the team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best
wishes for continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
