| 7 | 8 | | Americans celebrate Flag Day each year to mark the anniversary of |

| 8 | 9 | | the official adoption of the Stars and Stripes on June 14, 1777; and |

| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The idea for an annual day of celebration of the |

| 10 | 11 | | American flag is believed to have originated in 1885, when a |

| 11 | 12 | | Wisconsin public school teacher arranged for his students to |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | commemorate "Flag Birthday" on June 14; four years later, a |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | kindergarten teacher in New York City took up the cause, and in |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | 1894, Chicago hosted a general public school observance in parks |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | around the city that drew the participation of more than 300,000 |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | children; celebrations were held throughout the late 19th century |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | by the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia, the New York Society of the |

| 18 | 19 | | Sons of the Revolution, and the National Society of the Colonial |

| 19 | 20 | | Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and |

| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a |

| 26 | 27 | | in communities around the country, President Harry Truman signed an |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | Act of Congress in 1949 officially designating June 14 as National |

| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, The flag that once united our fledgling democracy |
