| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Americans everywhere are pausing on Veterans Day, |

| 6 | 7 | | November 11, 2018, to pay grateful tribute to those brave men and |
|---|
| 7 | 8 | | women who have served in the United States armed forces; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, This holiday was originally designated as Armistice |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Day, in recognition of the day that the guns of World War I fell |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | silent, and this year the date of November 11 is made especially |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | significant by the fact that it marks the 100th anniversary of the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | end of that devastating conflict; since 1954, when the name of the |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | observance was changed to Veterans Day, the holiday has honored all |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | who have performed military service in this country's behalf, |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | whether as a member of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | or Coast Guard; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, From the Revolutionary War to the present, more than |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | 40 million men and women have filled the ranks of our uniformed |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | branches; of those legions, over half a million have died in battle, |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | more than 1.5 million have been wounded, thousands have suffered |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | the rigors of imprisonment in POW camps, and thousands more remain |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | missing in action; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its history, our nation has been |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | sustained by those whose love of country is such that they are |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | willing to take up arms in its defense; every day of the year, |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | America's servicemen and servicewomen are at their posts, at home |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | and throughout the world, charged with maintaining the nation's |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | security and prepared to do their utmost in defense of their |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | homeland and the cause of freedom; and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Whether in time of war or peace, members of the U.S. |

| 31 | 32 | | armed forces work tirelessly as they keep faith with their oath to |

| 32 | 33 | | "support and defend the Constitution of the United States," and |

| 33 | 34 | | even though we set aside this special day in recognition of those |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | who have served, it is incumbent on our citizenry to hold always in |

| 35 | 36 | | their hearts the men and women in uniform, past and present, and to |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | honor their steadfast courage, their unfailing selflessness, and |

| 37 | 38 | | their willing sacrifice; now, therefore, be it |

| 38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Veterans Day 2018 and extend |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | heartfelt gratitude to all of our veterans for their valor and |

| 41 | 42 | | patriotism. |
