45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Lions Clubs International is celebrating the 100th
67 anniversary of its founding in 2017, and this occasion provides an
78 ideal opportunity to honor the Leo Club at Crosby High School for
89 its good works; and
910 WHEREAS, Established in 1917 by Melvin Jones as the
1011 Association of Lions Clubs, the community service organization held
1112 its first national convention that year in Dallas, with 12 of the 23
1213 participating clubs hailing from Texas; the Lions adopted a prime
1314 mission a decade later when Helen Keller urged them to become
1415 "Knights of the Blind"; through the years, the organization has
1516 undertaken numerous initiatives benefiting the visually impaired
1617 while also carrying out many other humanitarian efforts; and
1718 WHEREAS, The Lions of Texas have dedicated themselves to
1819 supporting such national programs as Sight for Kids, which has
1920 provided nearly 20 million screenings, and SightFirst, which raises
2021 funds for cataract operations and for programs to fight the other
2122 major causes of blindness; in addition, Texas Lions have introduced
2223 a number of effective initiatives, among them Journey for Sight and
2324 the Juvenile Diabetes Program; the Midland Lions became the first
2425 regional recycling center for collecting glasses to send abroad to
2526 those in need, and the Lions of Texas have formed five eye banks to
2627 assist in the collection and distribution of corneas for
2728 transplantation and medical research; and
2829 WHEREAS, Since 1949, the Texas Lions Camp has welcomed
2930 approximately 70,000 children with physical disabilities and
3031 diabetes, providing horseback riding, swimming, campouts, and
3132 other outdoor activities; the Lions of Texas also support disaster
3233 relief, antidrug campaigns, and vaccination programs; and
3334 WHEREAS, Many Texas Lions have served in key leadership roles
3435 with the parent organization, which today has 1.4 million members
3536 in over 200 locations around the world; Lions Clubs International
3637 was named the top nongovernmental agency in the world by the United
3738 Nations in 2012; and
3839 WHEREAS, Embodying the motto "We Serve," which has guided
3940 Lions Clubs International for more than four decades, the members
4041 of the Leo Club at Crosby High School have made a lasting, positive
4142 impact in their community and beyond, and they are truly deserving
4243 of special recognition in this centennial year; now, therefore, be
4344 it
4445 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4546 Legislature hereby honor the Leo Club at Crosby High School on the
4647 occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Lions Clubs
4748 International and extend to its members sincere best wishes for
4849 continued success in their important endeavors; and, be it further
4950 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5051 prepared for the Leo Club at Crosby High School as an expression of
5152 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
