5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Gus Cargile Jr. of Corpus Christi is celebrating his |

6 | 7 | | 95th birthday on July 31, 2017, and this occasion provides a welcome |

7 | 8 | | opportunity for family and friends to express the love and |

8 | 9 | | affection they hold for him; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Born in Corpus Christi in 1922, Gus Cargile opened |
---|
10 | 11 | | his own store when he was only 11 and sold snow cones and candy on |
---|
11 | 12 | | the weekends; he set up a fireworks stand for the Fourth of July and |
---|
12 | 13 | | New Year's as well, and while a student at Corpus Christi High |
---|
13 | 14 | | School, he worked for his father at Gus Cargile Lumber Company; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Following graduation, Mr. Cargile attended Texas |
---|
15 | 16 | | A&M University and went on to enlist in the United States Navy in |
---|
16 | 17 | | 1942; commissioned as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps |
---|
17 | 18 | | the following year, he became a pilot and squadron flight |
---|
18 | 19 | | instructor, and after World War II, he continued to serve in the |
---|
19 | 20 | | Marine Reserve until 1952, attaining the rank of captain; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In the early part of his career, Mr. Cargile was a |
---|
21 | 22 | | pilot for Earl P. Halliburton; he later founded five businesses, |
---|
22 | 23 | | Coastal Bend Manufacturing Company, Nueces Pallet Company, |
---|
23 | 24 | | Jalapeno Steel Company, Saxet Gun Shows, and Corpus Christi Gold |

24 | 25 | | Mine; in addition, after working for Industrial Fabricators and |

25 | 26 | | Mill Supply for five years, he bought the shop in 1970 and built it |

26 | 27 | | into one of the largest in the area; he passed ownership to the next |
---|
27 | 28 | | generation in 1984, but the following year, he opened the |
---|
28 | 29 | | Swap-A-Rama flea market, which he continues to run today, while |
---|
29 | 30 | | also consulting for Industrial Fabricators and Saxet Gun Shows; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cargile married the former Ada Gary, and they |

31 | 32 | | became the proud parents of seven children, Gary, Laura, Caroline, |

32 | 33 | | Mary Claire, Gus, John, and Ada; today, he enjoys spending time with |
---|
33 | 34 | | his 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; also an avid |

34 | 35 | | traveler, he has visited 70 countries on 6 continents, and his next |

35 | 36 | | adventure will be a trip to Thailand; and |

36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Meeting life's challenges with resilience, |

37 | 38 | | optimism, and determination, Gus Cargile is an inspiration to many |
---|
38 | 39 | | people, and he holds a special place in the hearts of all who are |
---|
39 | 40 | | privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it |

40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Gus Cargile on his 95th birthday |

42 | 43 | | and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, |
