45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The robotics team from Bushland High School reached
67 the pinnacle of success by winning the University Interscholastic
78 League Class 1A-4A FIRST Tech Challenge state championship held at
89 the Austin Convention Center on May 20, 2017; and
910 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the FIRST in Texas Foundation, the
1011 FIRST Tech Challenge provides middle and high school students with
1112 opportunities to design, build, program, and operate robots while
1213 also developing important STEM skills; and
1314 WHEREAS, After their impressive performance at the regional
1415 level, the students from Bushland High advanced to the state
1516 tournament, where they earned third place in the preliminaries;
1617 they entered the semifinal and final rounds in an alliance with
1718 fellow Panhandle school Kelton STEAM Academy, and together the two
1819 teams dispatched their opponents, going undefeated in both sets of
1920 matches and claiming the championship title; and
2021 WHEREAS, Benefiting from the able guidance of coaches Melissa
2122 Cochran and Kenny Miller, the Bushland High team received valuable
2223 contributions from the four members of its roster: Jack Smalligan,
2324 Hunter Miller, Mason Reed, and Justin Cochran; and
2425 WHEREAS, With their fine showing at the state contest, the
2526 members of the Bushland High robotics team have demonstrated
2627 tremendous skill, initiative, and an enduring commitment to
2728 excellence, and they are a source of great pride to their school and
2829 community; now, therefore, be it
2930 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3031 Legislature hereby congratulate the Bushland High School robotics
3132 team on winning the 2017 UIL FIRST Tech Challenge state
3233 championship and extend to its members sincere best wishes for
3334 continued success; and, be it further
3435 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3536 prepared for the squad as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3637 House of Representatives.
