6 | 7 | | suffer from glaucoma, the leading cause of preventable blindness in |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterized by |

9 | 10 | | gradual damage to the optic nerve, which over time causes |
---|
10 | 11 | | irreversible vision loss; in the early stages of its most common |
---|
11 | 12 | | form, there are virtually no symptoms, and many sufferers are |
---|
12 | 13 | | unaware that they have the disease until significant and permanent |
---|
13 | 14 | | damage is done; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Although a cure has yet to be found, early detection |
---|
15 | 16 | | is crucial to slowing optic nerve damage and preserving eyesight in |
---|
16 | 17 | | patients with glaucoma; the need for greater awareness is |
---|
17 | 18 | | particularly acute in certain high-risk groups, including the |
---|
18 | 19 | | elderly, diabetics, and persons of African, Asian, and Hispanic |
---|
19 | 20 | | descent, who are encouraged to be proactive in protecting their eye |
---|
20 | 21 | | health by undergoing regular examinations; and |

21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Glaucoma can be treated and managed if detected in |
---|
22 | 23 | | time, and National Glaucoma Awareness Month in January provides an |
---|
23 | 24 | | important opportunity to promote education about this debilitating |
---|
24 | 25 | | disease; now, therefore, be it |

25 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
26 | 27 | | Legislature hereby recognize National Glaucoma Awareness Month in |
---|
27 | 28 | | January 2018 and urge Texans to learn more about glaucoma detection |
---|
28 | 29 | | and treatment. |
