45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, More than three million Americans are estimated to
67 suffer from glaucoma, the leading cause of preventable blindness in
78 the United States; and
89 WHEREAS, Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterized by
910 gradual damage to the optic nerve, which over time causes
1011 irreversible vision loss; in the early stages of its most common
1112 form, there are virtually no symptoms, and many sufferers are
1213 unaware that they have the disease until significant and permanent
1314 damage is done; and
1415 WHEREAS, Although a cure has yet to be found, early detection
1516 is crucial to slowing optic nerve damage and preserving eyesight in
1617 patients with glaucoma; the need for greater awareness is
1718 particularly acute in certain high-risk groups, including the
1819 elderly, diabetics, and persons of African, Asian, and Hispanic
1920 descent, who are encouraged to be proactive in protecting their eye
2021 health by undergoing regular examinations; and
2122 WHEREAS, Glaucoma can be treated and managed if detected in
2223 time, and National Glaucoma Awareness Month in January provides an
2324 important opportunity to promote education about this debilitating
2425 disease; now, therefore, be it
2526 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
2627 Legislature hereby recognize National Glaucoma Awareness Month in
2728 January 2018 and urge Texans to learn more about glaucoma detection
2829 and treatment.
