45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Across the nation, April 2018 is being observed as
67 Distracted Driving Awareness Month; and
78 WHEREAS, Created by the National Safety Council, the campaign
89 aims to tackle the growing problem of distracted driving, which
910 encompasses such risky actions as talking on a cell phone, texting,
1011 eating, or grooming while behind the wheel; and
1112 WHEREAS, Each year, more than 100,000 automobile crashes in
1213 Texas involve distracted driving; a survey conducted by the Texas
1314 A&M Transportation Institute revealed that 38 percent of Texas
1415 motorists talk on their cell phones at least some of the time while
1516 driving, and more than 21 percent of drivers read or send text
1617 messages or e-mails; and
1718 WHEREAS, According to the National Safety Council and the
1819 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the last two years
1920 have seen the largest percentage increase in traffic fatalities in
2021 the United States in 51 years; while multiple factors contribute to
2122 traffic deaths, the risk of distracted driving due to technology is
2223 growing; and
2324 WHEREAS, Increased public awareness of these dangers is key
2425 to reducing incidents of distracted driving, and the monthlong
2526 observance in April is an opportunity for Texans to affirm their
2627 commitment to making our roadways safer for all; now, therefore, be
2728 it
2829 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
2930 Legislature hereby recognize April 2018 as Distracted Driving
3031 Awareness Month in Texas and encourage residents of the Lone Star
3132 State to support this worthwhile event.
