| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Across the nation, November 2018 is being observed |

| 6 | 7 | | as American Diabetes Month; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, More than 29 million Americans are affected with |

| 8 | 9 | | diabetes, the nation's seventh-leading cause of death; in type 1 |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | diabetes, the body fails to produce sufficient insulin, while in |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | the vastly more common type 2 diabetes, the body cannot use insulin |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | properly; if not controlled, both forms of the illness can cause |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | spikes in blood sugar that can eventually damage nerves and blood |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | vessels, resulting in a higher risk of heart disease and stroke, as |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | well as blindness, kidney disease, and other health problems; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, While there is currently no cure for diabetes, by |

| 16 | 17 | | addressing risk factors, patients can avoid or delay the |

| 17 | 18 | | development of type 2 diabetes and the additional health |

|---|

| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Medical professionals across the country are |

| 24 | 25 | | Americans gain greater understanding of diabetes, and the monthlong |

| 25 | 26 | | awareness campaign in November serves as a valuable way of |

| 26 | 27 | | educating the public about this critical disease; now, therefore, |

| 28 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 29 | 30 | | Legislature hereby recognize November 2018 as American Diabetes |

| 31 | 32 | | reduce their risk factors. |
