45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Raymondville lost one of its most admired civic
67 leaders with the untimely passing of former mayor Orlando A. Correa
78 on April 16, 2017, at the age of 54; and
89 WHEREAS, The son of Octavio and Alicia Correa, "Lonnie"
910 Correa was born in Raymondville on May 22, 1962, and grew up with
1011 the companionship of four siblings, Adrian, Omar, Dodie, and Liz;
1112 he graduated from Raymondville High School in 1980 and went on to
1213 earn master's degrees in counseling and school administration from
1314 Texas A&M University--Kingsville; and
1415 WHEREAS, Mr. Correa enjoyed a rewarding career in education
1516 that spanned nearly a quarter century and encompassed work as a
1617 teacher, counselor, principal, and superintendent; he later
1718 entered local politics by becoming a member of the Raymondville
1819 City Commission in May 1999; elected mayor in 2006, he played an
1920 important role in efforts involving municipal infrastructure,
2021 disaster recovery, police and fire facilities, and Raymondville
2122 Veterans' Park, among others, over the course of his nine-year
2223 tenure; and
2324 WHEREAS, This notable Texan further benefited his community
2425 through his service as president of the Raymondville Economic
2526 Development Corporation and his involvement with the Raymondville
2627 Chamber of Commerce, the Willacy County Historical Museum, the
2728 Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council, and the Willacy County
2829 Emergency Operations Center; moreover, he was a longtime member of
2930 the Raymondville Volunteer Fire Department and the local Lions Club
3031 and a valued parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church;
3132 and
3233 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Correa was blessed with
3334 the love and support of his wife, the former Cristina Moreno, with
3435 whom he shared nearly three decades of marriage; and
3536 WHEREAS, Lonnie Correa made a positive difference in his
3637 community through his vision, leadership, and selfless commitment
3738 to the well-being of others, and his contributions to Raymondville
3839 will continue to resonate for years to come; now, therefore, be it
3940 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4041 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Orlando A. Correa and
4142 extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
4243 wife, Cristina Correa; to his siblings, Adrian Correa and his wife,
4344 Sallie, Omar Correa and his wife, Hilda, Dodie de la Fuente and her
4445 husband, Oscar, and Liz Shamlian and her husband, Steve; to his
4546 sisters-in-law, Blanca Rivera and her husband, Jaime, Judy
4647 Gutierrez and her husband, Oscar, and Josie Moreno; and to his many
4748 other relatives and friends; and, be it further
4849 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4950 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5051 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Lonnie
5152 Correa.
