5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The cotton industry lost an admired leader with the |

6 | 7 | | passing of Bill Lovelady of El Paso on January 29, 2017, at the age |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in El Paso on February 27, 1946, Bill Lovelady |
---|
9 | 10 | | was the son of Dan and Louise Lovelady; he grew up in Acala and |
---|
10 | 11 | | completed his bachelor's degree in journalism at The University of |
---|
11 | 12 | | Texas at El Paso; he began farming cotton in 1973 and practiced |
---|
12 | 13 | | cutting-edge conservation methods in his fields in El Paso and |
---|
13 | 14 | | Hudspeth Counties; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Lovelady was dedicated to his industry and |
---|
15 | 16 | | helped shape the nation's agricultural policy through his |
---|
16 | 17 | | leadership in professional organizations; he traveled to many |
---|
17 | 18 | | countries promoting American cotton, and he was president of the |
---|
18 | 19 | | National Cotton Council at a crucial juncture; over the years, he |
---|
19 | 20 | | served the group in numerous capacities, including advisor to the |
---|
20 | 21 | | board, member of the Operations Committee, and chair of the |
---|
21 | 22 | | Beltwide Cotton Conference Steering Committee; he was also chair of |
---|
22 | 23 | | Supima and president of the Texas Association of Cotton Producer |
---|
23 | 24 | | Organizations and of the El Paso Valley Cotton Producers |
---|
24 | 25 | | Association; among myriad accolades, he received the 2009 Harry S. |
---|
25 | 26 | | Baker Distinguished Service Award from the NCC and the 2015 |
---|
26 | 27 | | Southwest Farm Press High Cotton Award; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Active in his community as well, Mr. Lovelady was a |
---|
28 | 29 | | director for First National Bank and WestStar Bank and gave |
---|
29 | 30 | | generously of his time and expertise to a number of other boards; he |
---|
30 | 31 | | served First United Methodist Church of Fabens as a lay leader and |
---|
31 | 32 | | as president of the administrative board; and |

32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Lovelady shared a fulfilling marriage of 47 |
---|
33 | 34 | | years with the love of his life, Suzie Lovelady, and he was the |
---|
34 | 35 | | proud father of a son, Ty, and a daughter, LeAnn; kind, sincere, and |
---|
35 | 36 | | thoughtful, with a genial manner and warm smile for all, he enjoyed |
---|
36 | 37 | | a host of long friendships, and he was a mainstay of the daily |
---|
37 | 38 | | circles at the coffee shops in Fabens and Fort Hancock; and |
---|
38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Although Bill Lovelady is deeply missed by all who |
---|
39 | 40 | | were fortunate enough to share in the richness of his life, he will |
---|
40 | 41 | | forever hold a special place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Bill Lovelady and |
---|
43 | 44 | | extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his passing; and, be it |
