| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, located in Oldham County, |

| 6 | 7 | | northwest of Amarillo, is celebrating its 25th anniversary as a |

| 7 | 8 | | coeducational institution in 2017; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, An accomplished civic leader and respected |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | businessman, Cal Farley was first inspired to help children in the |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Amarillo area after noticing young boys hanging around the local |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | baseball park instead of attending school; he later learned that |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | many of the boys came from disadvantaged households, and he |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | subsequently formed the Maverick Club and Kids, Inc., to provide |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | the children with access to extracurricular activities, as well as |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | food, clothing, and medical services; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Seeking to create a permanent sanctuary for troubled |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | youth in the community, Mr. Farley secured a donation of 120 acres |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | of land from local rancher Julian Bivins in 1938 and began housing |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | boys on the property the following year; on March 14, 1939, Boys |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Ranch received a charter from the Texas secretary of state, and two |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | years later, the Boys Ranch Independent School District was |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | established through legislative action; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, In 1987, Cal Farley's merged with Girlstown, USA, |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | and in 1992, it welcomed girls to live on the campus; in the recent |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | past, the ranch held an election exclusively for female residents |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | to decide whether to change the institution's name to the Boys and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | Girls Ranch, and the girls voted to preserve the original name |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | because of its historical significance; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Today, with some 300 youths in its care, Cal |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | Farley's is one of the largest organizations of its kind in the |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | country and a national leader in providing child and family |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | services; privately funded, it offers residential, spiritual, |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | educational, and community-based services at no cost to the |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | families it assists; and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Thousands of young people from across the nation |

| 36 | 37 | | have found hope, opportunity, and "A Shirttail to Hang Onto" at Cal |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | Farley's Boys Ranch, and it is indeed fitting that the proud history |

| 38 | 39 | | of Cal Farley's be recognized as the ranch marks this special |

| 39 | 40 | | milestone; now, therefore, be it |

| 40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby honor Cal Farley's Boys Ranch on the occasion of |

| 42 | 43 | | its 25th anniversary as a coeducational institution and extend to |
|---|
| 43 | 44 | | all those associated with the organization sincere best wishes for |
|---|
| 44 | 45 | | the future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

| 46 | 47 | | prepared for the ranch as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|---|
