| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program was created |

| 10 | 11 | | by the U.S. Department of Education in 1982 to recognize campuses |

| 11 | 12 | | that have demonstrated superior academic performance or made |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | notable progress in improving outcomes among economically |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | disadvantaged students; Austin Middle School is one of only 26 |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | public schools in Texas to have earned a nomination from the Texas |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | commissioner of education for the 2017 award; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, This campus was designated a science, technology, |

| 17 | 18 | | engineering, and math (STEM) magnet for fifth through eighth grades |

| 18 | 19 | | in 2008; under the able leadership of principal Cathy Van Ness, 94 |

| 19 | 20 | | percent of Austin Middle School students have met or exceeded State |

| 20 | 21 | | of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness test standards in all |

| 21 | 22 | | subjects; and |

| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Through dedication, hard work, and perseverance, |

| 23 | 24 | | the teachers and students of Austin Middle School have established |

| 24 | 25 | | a record of scholastic excellence, and their outstanding efforts |

| 25 | 26 | | have been duly recognized with the Blue Ribbon School award |

| 27 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
