| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1986, the Feeding Texas network |

| 9 | 10 | | consists of 21 food banks that work through more than 3,000 |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | community agencies to reduce hunger and improve health in all 254 |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Texas counties; and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, To further these goals, the network has fostered |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | many public-private partnerships, including the Texans Feeding |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Texans Surplus Agricultural Products Grant Program, which helps |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | feed low-income families by offering incentives to growers to |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | donate fresh produce that would otherwise be left in the field; this |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | initiative offsets the costs of harvesting, packaging, and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | transportation and has resulted in the distribution of over 150 |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | million pounds of surplus produce across the state; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Members of Feeding Texas have also established the |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | "Feeding with Impact" partnership with the Texas Health and Human |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Services Commission, which seeks to improve the diets of low-income |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | Texans by distributing fresh produce and offering nutrition |

| 24 | 25 | | education and obesity prevention services; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Network members have partnered with the Texas Health |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | and Human Services Commission to provide client education and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | application assistance for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance |

| 28 | 29 | | Program, greatly increasing the efficiency of the |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | eligibility-determination process; Feeding Texas has also created |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | the Second Chance program, which allows prison inmates to gain |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | valuable work experience and certifications through volunteering |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | at food banks; and |

| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, By facilitating the distribution of surplus food, |

| 34 | 35 | | raising awareness about good dietary practices, and helping to |

| 35 | 36 | | prevent obesity, Feeding Texas is reducing hunger and contributing |
