5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The 50th anniversary of the North Alamo Water Supply |

6 | 7 | | Corporation provides a fitting opportunity to recognize the |

7 | 8 | | important role it plays in providing clean water to the people of |

8 | 9 | | the Rio Grande Valley; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Recognizing an urgent need for potable water, a |
---|
10 | 11 | | group of farmers and homeowners joined together in 1966 to form a |
---|
11 | 12 | | water utility; the following year, the North Alamo Water Supply |
---|
12 | 13 | | Corporation began providing households with clean drinking water |
---|
13 | 14 | | and farmers with a reliable source of water for agricultural use; |
---|
14 | 15 | | initially established in Hidalgo County, the project eventually |
---|
15 | 16 | | expanded to include portions of Willacy and Cameron Counties; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, NAWSC is the largest rural water utility in |
---|
17 | 18 | | Texas and the third-largest water utility in the Rio Grande Valley; |
---|
18 | 19 | | encompassing 1,000 square miles and 17 cities or communities, it |
---|
19 | 20 | | provides water to nearly 180,000 people, 24 schools, and 6 other |

20 | 21 | | public water systems; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, A pioneer in the desalination of brackish |
---|
22 | 23 | | groundwater, NAWSC maintains six surface water treatment plants and |
---|
23 | 24 | | five reverse osmosis treatment plants; together these facilities |
---|
24 | 25 | | process more than 34 million gallons a day, which is delivered via |
---|
25 | 26 | | 3,500 miles of pipeline, 9 booster stations, and 8 elevated storage |
---|
26 | 27 | | towers; four wastewater treatment facilities serve more than 3,260 |
---|
27 | 28 | | connections in four communities, and the corporation is completing |
---|
28 | 29 | | a new $11 million regional treatment and wastewater collection |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Serving a growing population while making the most |

31 | 32 | | of limited freshwater resources, the North Alamo Water Supply |

33 | 34 | | Texans and continues to be a leader in the water and wastewater |

35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of the North |

37 | 38 | | Alamo Water Supply Corporation and extend to its management and |

38 | 39 | | staff sincere best wishes for continued success with their |
