5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A distinguished career in public service and |

6 | 7 | | academia drew to a close with the death of Robert D. Auerbach of |

7 | 8 | | Bethesda, Maryland, on January 20, 2017, at the age of 88; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Robert Auerbach was born in Chicago on December 2, |
---|
9 | 10 | | 1928; he earned a degree in economics at Roosevelt College and went |
---|
10 | 11 | | on to complete a master's degree and Ph.D. in economics at the |
---|
11 | 12 | | University of Chicago, under the tutelage of the famed economist |
---|
12 | 13 | | Milton Friedman; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Early in his academic career, Dr. Auerbach worked |
---|
14 | 15 | | for several colleges and universities in Illinois, Kansas, and |
---|
15 | 16 | | Virginia before joining the faculty of American University, where |
---|
16 | 17 | | he rose to full professor; while living in Washington, D.C., he also |
---|
17 | 18 | | served as an economist for the Federal Reserve System, the House of |
---|
18 | 19 | | Representatives Committee on Banking, Finance, and Urban Affairs, |
---|
19 | 20 | | and the Department of the Treasury; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Professor Auerbach taught at the University of |
---|
21 | 22 | | California-Riverside from 1983 until 1993, when he returned to |
---|
22 | 23 | | Washington to serve for six years as an economist for the House |
---|
23 | 24 | | Committee on Banking and Financial Services; he was the author of |
---|
24 | 25 | | four well-regarded books and dozens of scholarly articles, and for |
---|
25 | 26 | | the final 18 years of his career, he served as a professor of public |
---|
26 | 27 | | affairs at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The |
---|
27 | 28 | | University of Texas at Austin, where he earned the deep respect and |
---|
28 | 29 | | lasting affection of his colleagues and his students; he retired |
---|
29 | 30 | | from UT in May 2016 and was subsequently named a professor emeritus; |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, In his leisure, Dr. Auerbach enjoyed taking long |

32 | 33 | | walks with his wife, Linda, with whom he shared 45 years, and he |
---|
33 | 34 | | also loved spending time with his two children, Donald and Kathryn; |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Bob Auerbach was a devoted family man, a |
---|
36 | 37 | | well-respected scholar, and a consummate gentleman, and he leaves |
---|
37 | 38 | | behind a record of achievement his loved ones can remember with |

38 | 39 | | pride; now, therefore, be it |

39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Robert D. Auerbach |

41 | 42 | | and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family: to his |

42 | 43 | | wife, Linda Auerbach; to his son, Donald Auerbach, and his wife, |

43 | 44 | | Courtney Hagen; to his daughter, Kathryn Crandlemire, and her |

44 | 45 | | husband, Erik; to his granddaughter, Charlotte Crandlemire; and to |

45 | 46 | | his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |
