| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Rowlett are gathering in Austin |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | on February 16, 2017, to celebrate Rowlett Day at the State Capitol; |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The area around present-day Rowlett was first |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | settled in the 1840s by two immigration companies, the W. S. Peters |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Colony and the Charles Mercer Colony; a post office was set up in |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | 1880 and named Morris, after its first postmaster, but the name was |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | later changed to Rowlett, after Rowlett Creek, a tributary of the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | east fork of the Trinity River; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The arrival of the Dallas and Greenville Railway in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | 1889 helped the town become a prosperous cotton farming community |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | with a school, churches, and businesses, and in 1921, it was |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | included on the route of the Bankhead Highway, the nation's second |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | cross-country paved highway; the city was incorporated in 1952 by a |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | vote of 84 citizens; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Now with easy access to Dallas by way of the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | President George Bush Turnpike and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | light rail system, Rowlett has grown into a thriving community of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | more than 60,000 residents who enjoy 30 miles of beautiful Lake Ray |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Hubbard shoreline; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The town has been named as a Tree City USA, and it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | has won recognition from the Texas Economic Development Council and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the Dallas Business Journal for its economic development |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | achievements; popular annual events include an Easter egg hunt, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | fireworks on the Fourth of July, the Movies on Main series, and a |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | holiday parade and tree lighting ceremony every Christmas; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Honoring their heritage as they embrace the |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | opportunities of the future, the citizens of Rowlett may take |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | justifiable pride in their efforts to cultivate such an attractive |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | and comfortable community in which to live, work, and raise a |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | family; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 16, 2017, as Rowlett Day at |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin. |
