No. 343 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Panhandle Herald is marking the 130th anniversary of its founding on July 22, 2017; and WHEREAS, On that date in 1887, the inaugural edition of the Herald was published by Henry Harold Brookes, a former Episcopal missionary who served as a pastor in Houston before he decided to pursue a career in journalism; after relocating to Panhandle, he initially operated the weekly paper out of a tent, using a wooden printing press that he built himself; the publication quickly became an integral part of the community, reporting vital news and chronicling the daily experiences of local residents; and WHEREAS, During the decades that followed, the Herald continued to serve as an essential source of information for Carson County citizens, and it ultimately became a historic institution in its own right; it is the oldest newspaper in continuous operation in the Panhandle region of Texas and one of the area's longest-surviving businesses; and WHEREAS, Over the years, the Herald has passed through the hands of a number of owners, including such prominent figures as Robert Lee Satterwhite, who later served as speaker of the Texas House of Representatives; today, the paper benefits from the able leadership of Shaun and Frank Wink, who together purchased the publication in August 2009; the Herald remains dedicated to covering the people and events of Panhandle, White Deer, and surrounding areas, and the paper has expanded its reach through online subscriptions and social media; and WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the Panhandle Herald has provided valuable local reportage to its readership, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor this esteemed newspaper for the high regard it has enjoyed in its community during the past 13 decades; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 130th anniversary of the Panhandle Herald and extend to all those associated with the newspaper sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Panhandle Herald as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
