45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The Panhandle Herald is marking the 130th
67 anniversary of its founding on July 22, 2017; and
78 WHEREAS, On that date in 1887, the inaugural edition of the
89 Herald was published by Henry Harold Brookes, a former Episcopal
910 missionary who served as a pastor in Houston before he decided to
1011 pursue a career in journalism; after relocating to Panhandle, he
1112 initially operated the weekly paper out of a tent, using a wooden
1213 printing press that he built himself; the publication quickly
1314 became an integral part of the community, reporting vital news and
1415 chronicling the daily experiences of local residents; and
1516 WHEREAS, During the decades that followed, the Herald
1617 continued to serve as an essential source of information for Carson
1718 County citizens, and it ultimately became a historic institution in
1819 its own right; it is the oldest newspaper in continuous operation in
1920 the Panhandle region of Texas and one of the area's
2021 longest-surviving businesses; and
2122 WHEREAS, Over the years, the Herald has passed through the
2223 hands of a number of owners, including such prominent figures as
2324 Robert Lee Satterwhite, who later served as speaker of the Texas
2425 House of Representatives; today, the paper benefits from the able
2526 leadership of Shaun and Frank Wink, who together purchased the
2627 publication in August 2009; the Herald remains dedicated to
2728 covering the people and events of Panhandle, White Deer, and
2829 surrounding areas, and the paper has expanded its reach through
2930 online subscriptions and social media; and
3031 WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the Panhandle Herald has
3132 provided valuable local reportage to its readership, and it is
3233 indeed a pleasure to honor this esteemed newspaper for the high
3334 regard it has enjoyed in its community during the past 13 decades;
3435 now, therefore, be it
3536 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3637 Legislature hereby commemorate the 130th anniversary of the
3738 Panhandle Herald and extend to all those associated with the
3839 newspaper sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
3940 further
4041 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4142 prepared for the Panhandle Herald as an expression of high regard by
4243 the Texas House of Representatives.
