| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Waco are gathering in Austin on |

| 6 | 7 | | March 15, 2017, to celebrate Waco Day at the State Capitol; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Surveyor George B. Erath laid out the first block of |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | Waco in 1849, and lots were sold for five dollars each; named Waco |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Village after the Huaco Indians who originally inhabited the area, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | the new town was selected as the seat of McLennan County in 1850 and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | incorporated as Waco in 1856; and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, After the Civil War, Waco became an important stop |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | on a spur of the Chisholm Trail, and by the early 1870s, more than |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | 600,000 head of cattle had been driven through the area; the |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | railroad arrived in 1871, and the city subsequently became a |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | debarkation point for settlers heading west, as well as a shipping |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | hub for cotton, wool, and hides; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Waco today is home to the renowned Baylor |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | University, and McLennan Community College and Texas State |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Technical College further reflect the importance of education to |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | the area; the city's economy is supported by the forward-thinking |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | efforts of the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce, which works to |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | foster a range of industries, including aerospace, advanced |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | manufacturing, and health care; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike delight in such |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | attractions as the Cameron Park Zoo, Art Center Waco, and Homestead |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | Heritage Traditional Crafts Village; Waco is also home to three |

| 28 | 29 | | uniquely Texan institutions, the Dr Pepper Museum, the Texas Ranger |

| 29 | 30 | | Hall of Fame and Museum, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame; Lake |

| 30 | 31 | | Waco, the scenic riverwalk along the Brazos, and the 416-acre |

| 31 | 32 | | Cameron Park offer further recreational opportunities; moreover, |

| 32 | 33 | | the annual Heart O' Texas Fair and Rodeo in Waco has been a Central |

| 33 | 34 | | Texas tradition for more than six decades and features livestock |

| 35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Boasting a rich history, thriving educational and |

| 36 | 37 | | cultural institutions, and a dynamic business community, Waco has |

| 37 | 38 | | established itself as an outstanding place to live and work, and its |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | citizens may indeed take pride in their city's ongoing |

| 39 | 40 | | achievements; now, therefore, be it |

| 40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 15, 2017, as Waco Day at the |

| 42 | 43 | | State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best |
|---|
| 43 | 44 | | wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin. |
