| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Historians believe that pie originated with the |

| 10 | 11 | | ancient Greeks, who developed the first pastry shell; later, the |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Romans published the world's first pie recipe, which included |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | rye-crusted goat cheese and honey, though fillings also included |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | savory ingredients like meat and seafood; the English brought |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | mincemeat pies with them as they crossed the ocean to America and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | the colonists continued the tradition, using dried fruit, cinnamon, |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | and nutmeg to season the filling; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In Texas, bakers often incorporate local produce |

| 18 | 19 | | into their pies, from peaches grown in Central Texas to sweet |

| 19 | 20 | | potatoes grown in the northeastern part of our state; the pecan, the |

| 20 | 21 | | fruit of the state tree, continues to be one of the most well-known |

| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Families have long come together to create and enjoy |

| 23 | 24 | | the fruits of their labor--an exceptionally American dish, with a |

| 24 | 25 | | special place in our shared culture; by taking the time to bake pies |

| 25 | 26 | | from scratch, older and younger Texans bridge the years between |

| 26 | 27 | | them to create new memories and culinary delights in kitchens |

| 27 | 28 | | across the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

| 28 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 29 | 30 | | Legislature hereby commemorate Texas Homemade Pie Day on February |
