5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Fernando Landeros Verdugo has been selected as |

6 | 7 | | Mr. Amigo 2016 by the Mr. Amigo Association of Brownsville, and |

7 | 8 | | this is a fitting opportunity to celebrate this outstanding |

8 | 9 | | philanthropist's achievements and contributions; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Each year since 1964, the Mr. Amigo Association has |
---|
10 | 11 | | designated as "Mr. Amigo" an eminent Mexican citizen who has |
---|
11 | 12 | | contributed to the friendship between the United States and Mexico; |
---|
12 | 13 | | and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Born in Mexico City in 1963, Fernando Landeros |
---|
14 | 15 | | earned his law degree at the Universidad Iberoamericana, studied |
---|
15 | 16 | | political philosophy and comparative governments at Harvard |
---|
16 | 17 | | University, and earned a master's degree in humanities and Mexican |
---|
17 | 18 | | history; and |

18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Landeros is the founder and president of the |

19 | 20 | | Fundación Teletón, which for the past 20 years has hosted a popular |
---|
20 | 21 | | nationwide telethon every December to raise money for the Centro de |
---|
21 | 22 | | Rehabilitación Infantil Teletón, a system of 22 pediatric |
---|
22 | 23 | | rehabilitation centers providing expert care to children with |
---|
23 | 24 | | disabilities; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, This remarkable effort has benefited more than |
---|
25 | 26 | | 96,000 families in Mexico and has distributed funds to over 500 |
---|
26 | 27 | | foundations and social work institutions, which in turn serve some |
---|
27 | 28 | | 293,000 people; Fundación Teletón also supports University |
---|
28 | 29 | | Teletón, which has trained nearly 1,000 therapists; in 2014, the |
---|
29 | 30 | | foundation opened its first Children's Rehabilitation Institute in |
---|
30 | 31 | | the United States, a 45,000-square-foot facility in San Antonio |
---|
31 | 32 | | that serves up to 600 patients a year; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of his achievements, Mr. Landeros |

33 | 34 | | was presented in 2006 with an honorary doctorate from the |
---|
34 | 35 | | Universidad Anáhuac México Sur, and in 2013 he received the Medal of |
---|
35 | 36 | | Civic Merit "Eduardo Neri and Legislators of 1913" from the Mexican |

36 | 37 | | legislature; and |
---|
37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Fernando Landeros has dedicated himself to |

38 | 39 | | assisting and empowering disabled children, both in Mexico and the |
---|
39 | 40 | | United States, and his exemplary efforts have made a positive |
---|
40 | 41 | | difference in thousands of lives while helping strengthen the bonds |
---|
41 | 42 | | of friendship between two great nations; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

43 | 44 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Fernando Landeros Verdugo on being |

44 | 45 | | named Mr. Amigo 2016 and extend to him sincere best wishes for |

45 | 46 | | continued success in his important work; and, be it further |
